We got engaged on Christmas Day 2014 and the wedding planning started the very next day! I knew that Lulu Browns would be the first place I went wedding dress shopping. My friend had bought her dress from there previously and the atmosphere was just so relaxed, the staff so helpful and friendly, the dresses so beautiful and we got cake! Bonus.
I had never really given much thought about my wedding before – but I always knew I wanted a tea-length wedding dress. So when I first went to Lulu Browns on 17th January 2015, I was so excited to see the exact dress I had pictured in my head – Justin Alexander ‘Nell’ and I think my face gave it away. It was the first dress I ever tried on and I knew it was the one right away, I just couldn’t imagine myself getting married in anything other than that dress. I loved how understated it was – just lace and the satin cummerbund, no sparkles – but I still felt like a princess. It was the perfect dress for me. I tried on all different styles and went to other bridal boutiques but just kept coming back to Lulus and trying on Nell. I think I went 3 times before I actually bought it. On the day I stuck to the old adage of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a lucky sixpence in my shoe. My something old was my engagement ring, my something new was my shoes, my something borrowed was my mum’s pearl bracelet and my something blue was my sapphire earrings (my gift from my husband to be!)
As my dress was ankle length, it gave me an excuse to get some amazing shoes. My pink Sophia Webster Coco Flamingo heels were a wedding gift from my older brother, Adam. I loved how the flamingo detail on the heel looked like a love heart and after breaking them in for a few months prior, I managed to wear them for the whole day!
I didn’t wear a veil on my wedding day. I had tried them on and contemplated a short 60s style from Lulus but in the end I just didn’t feel comfortable wearing one. I opted for some beautiful pearl Miranda Templeton hair combs from Lulus. They were understated but went really well with the dress and my hair do.
As much as I love flowers, I was never sure what flowers would be in mine and my bridesmaid’s bouquets. My florist, Debbie of Ewood Florists, was really helpful and my flowers were amazing. My bouquet consisted of tulips (my favourites), hydrangeas and roses. All my bridesmaid’s had the same but in white so as not to clash with their beautiful floral dresses.
The run up to my big day was marred with a 3 day stay in hospital. Instead of me being all excited to pick up my wedding dress, my mum went in tears – but came back with champagne! Throughout the day everyone complimented me on the dress and even now when looking at the pictures, everyone has commented on what a wonderful dress it was. I had the best experience when buying my dress and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend all future brides to go and experience Lulus!
Thank you so much for sharing your wedding story with us Emily. I think we are all in agreement you had the most beautiful wedding.
